What is the Process?

faq-1Physical therapy is an intervention that involves a variety of treatment procedures such as manual therapy, heat, cold, electrical stimulation and ultrasound that may be utilized as needed to control pain and allow improved freedom of motion.  As movement improves, we begin to work on endurance and strength so you can resume useful activity.

On the first day you will receive a thorough evaluation to identify the cause of your pain and identify the structures that are injured or weakened.  You will be informed of the evaluation findings and we will discuss the recommended plan of care and your goals for treatment.

As the treatment proceeds we will begin to emphasize progressive strengthening, stabilization and endurance building.  Individual instruction is given for proper exercise technique as well as muscle and joint requirements for normal function.  Throughout the rehabilitation process patients are taught how to exercise safely to minimize the potential for aggrevation or re-injury.

faq-2What will my therapy consist of?

Each treatment plan is individually tailored to your specific needs.  This is determined by the evaluation findings and the information you provide regarding your lifestyle, occupation and your functional goals.  The first priority of treatment is to minimize pain.  Physical modalities such as heat, cold, electrical stimulation and ultrasound are often utilized to reduce pain and tenderness.  We also provide patient education on methods to protect the injury from aggravating stress and offer advice on positioning guidelines and home care.  Manual therapy is utilized to improve muscle relaxation and joint mobility.  As tolerance to movement and range of movement improve we progress to active range of motion, strengthening and exercises to promote stability and proper movement control.  Progressive strengthening and conditioning activities are incorporated into the treatment plan to help you improve tolerance to functional activities and allow you to resume your normal activities and functional goals.

faq3How long will my treatment session last?

New patients should expect to spend about an hour on the first visit.  This allows time for registration forms, a thorough evaluation and the initiation of  treatment.  Follow-up visits will typically be shorter and you can allow 45 minutes for those.  If you have time constraints on a given day let me know and I will work with you to finish that treatment within your time frame.

Is physical therapy covered by my insurance?

Generally speaking the answer to this question is yes.  Physical therapy is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance plans.  Individual insurance plans may vary with regard to how much physical therapy is paid for and other specifics such as co-payments and co-insurance.  The best way to know what your specific plan covers is to call the customer service number on your insurance card.  PSPT is happy to provide assistance to patients to help determine coverage amounts and limitations but please remember that you are ultimately responsible for the costs of treatment.

How much does physical therapy cost?

Physical therapy is covered by most insurance plans, Medicare and Medicaid.  Amounts of coverage may vary from plan to plan.  Patients are strongly encouraged to find out the extent of coverage with their individual plan and PSPT is happy to assist patients in determining those amounts.

Flat rate payment options are available to all patients who wish to self pay and PSPT is happy to assist patients with establishing a payment plan. Out of pocket expenses are reimbursable and may be submitted to your insurance.  Because PSPT is not waiting 3-4 months for reimbursement from insurance, patients who elect to pay out of pocket receive substantial discounts compared to the itemized customary charges.

PSPT is also happy to submit charges for treatment to your insurance.  You will need to bring your insurance cards with you to the first therapy appointment.  With the information provided on the card, PSPT will confirm coverage elegability and the limits of coverage.  Please be aware that insurance companies qualify the information that they provide to us by stating “explanation of benefits is not a guarantee of payment”.  It is important that you also check with your insurance company prior to starting physical therapy.

PSPT is listed as an in-network provider with a growing list of insurance plans.  Please refer to the insurance page to see that list.  We are constantly working to expand our list of in-network plans.
